Annual Baked Pie Contest

18th Annual Baked Fruit Pie Contest Sponsored by Leader Publications. August 1st is the entry deadline.

 

WHO: Berrien County Residents Two Divisions: Youth (Ages 12 - 21) Adult (22 and older/includes senior citizens) (Age on day of the contest, August 17, 2013)


WHAT: Baked Fruit Pie -- Single, Double, Lattice Crust, or Crumb Topping Must use at least one fruit, fresh or canned (but no canned filling or mixes)


WHEN: Saturday of the Fair, August 17, 2013 Registration 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Closed judging starts at 10:00 a.m. Winners announced at noon.


WHERE: USA/Ag-Expo Building #34, Berrien County Youth Fairgrounds WHY: To promote the fruit industry and the Berrien County Youth Fair's USA/Ag-Expo Building activities.


DEADLINE: August 1, 2013 – All written entries and recipes are due in the Fair Office.  

 

CONTEST RULES

Recipes cannot include mixes or canned fillings. No whipped topping is allowed (no Cool Whip, no Whipped Cream). No cream filling of any type is allowed (no cream pies, no custard pies). Pies should not have to be refrigerated. Crust must be made from scratch. Homemade glaze is allowed. No alcohol allowed.


No commercial bakers may enter the contest. Each contestant may enter no more than two pies. Contestants of the same family can not enter identical recipes, in either age division.


No recipe changes following submission of original “Entry Form.” Pies with a variance in recipe will be disqualified. Contestants must be residents of Berrien County and/or be in compliance with BCYF exhibitor rules.


Contestants must claim pies/dishes at the completion of the contest. Ribbons will be awarded to the top five placing contestants in each age group, with trophies, ribbons, and/or gift baskets going to 1st place champions and “Most Eye Appealing” winner.


It is preferred that winners be present to receive awards, which will be awarded at approximately noon. Following award presentations, the public will be invited to sample the entries.


Judges' decisions are final. Participants agree to have their name and recipe released to the media and for publication in a recipe book.
